Asphalt Paving FAQs

If you have a question and don’t see the answer listed just give us a call at 804-999-9000.

I see Richard's Paving provides service in Richmond, VA. What other counties do you provide service?

Richard’s Paving provides residential asphalt paving, commercial paving, resurfacing, repair, and sealcoating services to all counties in the Richmond Metro Area. You can see a full list of counties on our service area page.

How long does an asphalt driveway last?

An asphalt driveway should last 20 – 30 years. But, there are many factors that can lower a driveway’s lifespan. Humidity can help moisture accumulate under the pavement and weaken it, leaking pipes and improper drainage can cause the pavement to fail, and cracks filled with frozen water can make them expand. Neglect will also hurt the lifespan of your driveway. If cracks and potholes aren’t filled while they are small, the problem will be more expensive later. Finally, without sealcoating your asphalt every 3 – 5 years cracking and other damage will occur more often.

What will the driveway look like when the asphalt installation is finished?

The pavement will be very dark which is why it’s called “blacktop.” You might notice some roller makes where the handwork was completed, but this will blend together after some usage, leaving a smooth appearance. Here at Richard’s Paving, beautiful and high-quality asphalt driveways are our specialty, and we want you to have the beautiful asphalt driveway you dream of.

How long before I can use my newly paved driveway?

Driving on new asphalt that hasn’t had time to cure can damage the surface and leave tire marks. The safest bet is waiting a week, but usually, 2 to 3 days will work.

What's the difference between pervious, porous, and permeable asphalt?

These terms are easily mixed up but here are the definitions:

  • Pervious and permeable are interchangeable. It’s where the asphalt has connected spaces that allow water to pass through the surface.
  • Porous allows water to pass through the surface as well, but the holes and spaces aren’t connected to each other.

How do I know whether I should replace or repair my asphalt driveway?

Repairing your driveway is always an option but here are some reasons it might be time for a replacement.

  1. You have standing water in the driveway due to pits and ruts. These pits and ruts are the results of structural damage.
  2. When the binder and aggregate come loose from each other you will start seeing pieces of gravel on the surface. This can be repaired, but when large pieces start breaking away you will need more work done.
  3. Alligator cracks are cracks that divide the pavement into a series of broken sections. This means the subbase isn’t supporting the upper layer of asphalt.
  4. If the driveway is 10-15 years old and you have not regularly sealcoated it, a full replacement will be better than repairs since multiple problems can be present at once.

Every driveway’s situation is unique. If you are not sure whether you need repairs or replacement, give us a call and tell us about the problem.

How long will it take you to pave my driveway?

The time is takes to complete your project depends on a number of factors including your schedule, the weather, driveway size, and the condition of the current driveway.

Should I pave my driveway with asphalt or concrete?

An asphalt driveway is less expensive than concrete and more cost-efficient to install. Second, asphalt is more easily resurfaced and maintained. Concrete is more expensive, but you can customize it more with stamps and colors. When we give you an estimate, we will answer any questions you have about both.

Do you offer commercial paving services?

Yes, we do. We offer a range of commercial paving services including.

We aren’t limited to the type of business we work with as well. We can pave parking lots for churches, restaurants, apartment complexes, parks, offices, shopping centers, schools, golf courses, sports facilities, and more.
